Enjoy A Pleasant Stroll Through Brompton Cemetery...

4th Jul 2011

Whilst staying at The Rockwell visit Brompton cemetery.  Built in 1840 this fascinating graveyard is one of the oldest planned cemeteries in London and has been filled with the bodies of the great and the good since that time. Notable internments include 'Gentleman Jim'  the famous Victorian boxer and 'Long Wolf' the Indian chief and veteran of the Sioux Wars. Long Wolf died in 1892 after taking part in the 'Wild West Show' (at nearby  Earls Court Exhibition Centre) his remains were taken back to America by his ancestors in 1997.

Nowadays, the cemetery rarely conducts new burials, and its primary function is as one of London's Royal Parks. Only a short walk from The Rockwell it is well worth a visit for an evening stroll.
